Abstract:

Four typescript letters from various parties involved in resolving a dispute concerning compensation for the use of Pueblo Indian land for a railroad right-of-way that had been partially prepared and then abandoned by the railroad company. Correspondence includes that from two railroad company attorneys, Edward O. Walcott and Edward L. Bartlett, its Chief Engineer, M.H. Rogers, and the acting Indian Agent, Captain [Charles E.] Nordstrom. The disputed rights-of-way were located in Santa Clara Pueblo, New Mexico and San Juan Pueblo [i.e. Ohkay Owingeh, New Mexico]. Nordstrom writes that the Indians feel they should be compensated for the years of loss of valuable agricultural land which had been abandoned without their knowledge and which had been granted in expectation of being compensated in some way. The railroad company disclaims any title to the old road-bed and states it has no objection to its use by the Indians for any reason.
